Council delight at extra-care housing in Thurrock

CONSTRUCTION work is to start on a stunning £8.6 million development that will boost housing choices for older people in Thurrock.

The new scheme is being developed in partnership with Hanover, Thurrock Council and the Homes and Communities Agency. It will have 18 one-bedroom and 47 two-bedroom self – contained apartments and is due for completion in summer 2012.

Situated in Thurrock’s Stifford Clays area, the new development is expected to create a number of new jobs for local people during the building stage – led by Bramall Construction – and afterwards through the on-site care team and Hanover staff.

Residents of the new development will have access to a range of services including: a restaurant, hair and beauty salon, estate manager services, a guest room and a 24-hour on-site care team.

Each apartment will have a modern fitted kitchen, a stylish shower room and an emergency response alarm with assisted technologies.

Hanover Director, Claire Anderson said: “Hanover is delighted to have been selected as the preferred provider for this stunning new Extra Care Scheme.

“Today is the first step in the construction phase and over the next 12 months, we will be working closely with the council to ensure the new building delivers a fantastic array of services and facilities which will benefit older people in Thurrock.”

Cllr Tony Fish, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “I’m delighted that we are opening this new Extra Care housing facility, the first of its kind in Thurrock. With 65 new units of Extra Care housing, this accommodation will help keep people out of residential and nursing home care and enable them to stay in their own home, but with the support necessary to maintain their independence and quality of life.”

Glen Eaton, Business Development Manager at Bramall Construction said: “We are delighted to be working alongside Hanover and Thurrock Council to help to provide vital new homes for older people in the area.”
